Ford made a statement when they introduced their new design strategy, starting with the Ford Fiesta, back in 2010. Today Ford announced that they will, once again, be using the Fiesta platform to introduce the most fuel efficient car the world has ever seen.
Available in Europe, and hopefully in South Africa soon, the Ford Fiesta ECOnetic is powered by a 1.6 liter diesel engine, producing 71kW and 205Nm of torque. What got the world talking is not the power, but the amazing “green” aspect of this engine. With an average fuel consumption of 3.3l/100km and CO2 emissions of just 87g/km, Ford can rightfully claim the greenest production engine of all time.
To achieve this, Ford had to add some modern bells-and-whistles to the Fiesta. Regenerative braking, automatic start-stop, optimised gear ratios, a slightly lower suspension, economic gear shift indicator and low-rolling resistance tires all work together to achieve these figures.
Stephen Odell, CEO and chairman of Ford in Europe said: “Customers can be assured these significant gains have been achieved without compromising the great driving quality for which Ford is famous.”
With an already very successful Fiesta, adding this amazing new engine can only further boost sales for Ford. If history is to repeat itself, we can look forward to seeing this innovative ECOnetic technology in models like the Ford Focus in the not to distant future.
